Essential Travel Tips for your Scottish Adventure

Planning a trip to Scotland?  Whether you are exploring historic cities, rugged Highlands or remote islands, a little preparation goes a long way.  Here are our top travel tips to help you make the most of your time in Scotland.

  1. Be Ready for all Kinds of Weather – Scotland’s weather is famous for being unpredictable – you can experience all four seasons in one day!  The key to our weather is layers – pack waterproofs, wear sturdy shoes and don’t forget the sun screen!
  2. Plan your Travel but Leave Room for Adventure  – Scotland is well connected but the distances can be deceiving – it often takes longer than you think to get from A to B.
  3. Respect the Land and Local Communities – Scotland’s landscapes are stunning and we want to keep them that way! You are welcome to roam but leave no trace!  Also we recommend supporting local businesses and suggest eating in family run cafes, shop at small stores and enjoy a dram in a traditional pub.
  4. Embrace the Culture & Customs  – Scotland is rich in history and warm hospitality.  Here is how to blend in like a local! Try the food – haggis, seafood and a Scottish breakfast are a must.  Try out the language whilst you are here – “Aye” means yes, “wee” means small and NEVER call a Scotsman English!
  5. Book Popular Attractions in Advance  – Scotland’s top sites liked Edinburgh Castle, Jacobite Steamtrain and whisky distilleries sell out fast.  We would advising prebooking tours and make sure to arrive early.
  6. Be Prepared for Midges  – Scotland’s infamous midges (tiny biting insects) love still humid weather in the Highlands.  They are most active between May to September. We would suggest bringing insect repellent – Avon Skin So Soft is a popular choice.  Also wearing long sleeves and light colours should help as midges are attracted to dark colours.
  7. Money and Tipping – Scotland used British Pounds (£GBP).  Most places accept cards but it is always handy to have cash for small purchases. Tipping is not mandatory but rounding up or leaving 10% is always appreciated in the service industry.
  8. Get Off the Beaten Path  – Some of Scotland’s best experiences happen away from tourist hotspots.  If you have extra time venture beyond the big cities.
  9. Enjoy the Whisky  (Responsibley!!) – Scotland is the home to over 140 whisky distilleries and each has its own unique flavour.  Here is in Scotland whisky is the water of life!  We also do not call it Scotch!  All regions have their own uniqueness – Speyside is smooth, Islay is smoky and the Highlands are bold.  Most importantly please remember that Scotland has a strict drink driving law so be sure to book a tour or use public transport if doing a whisky tasting.
  10. Most Importantly – Have Fun! – Scotland is a place of adventure, history and unforgettable experiences.  Take your time, embrace the unexpected and let yourself fall in love with our incredible country.
